One of Europe's biggest lithium cell factories to be built in Thuringia
The Chinese lithium-ion EV battery manufacturer CATL will build a a new highly automated new battery facility at the "Erfurter Kreuz" industrial area in Thuringia. It will be one of the largest European production sites for lithium cells. Next to production with a planned capacity of up to 14 GWh, the new facility will also include R&D and logistics. Around 600 new jobs will be created over the next four years. For CATL, reasons for choosing Germany as their first production location abroad include the chance to be closer to their customers, especially European OEMs, and to gain a better understanding of local markets. The first customer of the new factory will be German car manufacturer BMW.
The project agreement between CATL and Thuringia was signed on July 9, 2018, during the German-Chinese intergovernmental consultations in the Federal Chancellery in Berlin.
CATL's location-finding process was assisted by GTAI. It is the largest foreign direct investment project to have gone through GTAI's offices for years.
