Event review: Eastern Germany – The Innovative Healthcare Location

Investment Opportunities for Swedish Companies

May 07, 2015
Stockholm | Sweden

Germany Trade & Invest and the Tysk-Svenska Handelskammaren organized an exclusive investor seminar in Stockholm on May 07, 2015. The event was part of a roadshow with another event in Copenhagen on May 05.

After a warm welcome by Dr. Ralph-Georg Tischer, CEO, Tysk-Svenska Handelskammaren, and the German Ambassador to Sweden, Michael Bock, Christina Schön, Senior Manager Tax & Legal Services, Germany Trade & Invest, explained how Germany Trade & Invest can support foreign investment projects, especially in Eastern Germany.

She was followed by Dr. Marcus Schmidt, Director Chemicals & Healthcare, Germany Trade & Invest, who gave valuable insights into the German healthcare market. Sweden's spatial proximity to Europe’s biggest market, Germany, makes the new federal states an attractive location for Swedish investors. With a healthcare expenditure of more than EUR 300 billion (11,3% of GDP) and a growth rate of 3.6 % p.a., the healthcare sector is one of Germany's largest growth markets. Dr. Schmidt particularly highlighted the demographic change as a business driver and digital market opportunities for Swedish companies in Germany.

Afterwards, an example of outstanding research in the field of medical engineering was presented by Prof. Dr. Georg Rose, Chair for Healthcare Telematics & Medical Engineering at the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, who presented the "Forschungscampus STIMULATE" project in Magdeburg.

The fact that Eastern Germany still is new ground for Swedish companies investing in Germany was the result of a study conduted by the Tysk-Svenska Handelskammaren at the end of last year. Malin Johansson, Head of Corporate Communication, Member & Events at Tysk-Svenska Handelskammaren, gave an overview on this study.

The session was concluded by Lars Seidel, Research & Development, LOGE Deutschland GmbH, who pointed out why the opening of an office in Eastern Germany has proved to be the right decision for the Swedish company LOGE AB.

The speakers' presentations can be found under "AGENDA".

During the following networking reception, guests, speakers and representives of Germany Trade & Invest and the new federal states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia engaged in fruitful discussions.
